Accommodations

What is the difference between a seat, couchette and sleeper?

Seat: You will spend the night in a compartment with individual seats. Most night trains have seats that can recline.

Couchette: During the day, this compartment has benches. At night, the benches can be transformed into individual sleeping berths. A couchette generally can accommodate up to four or six persons.

Sleeper: Similar to a couchette but with more space, more comfort and fewer passengers. You sleep on a mattress instead of a bench.

Is upgrading still possible on the train?

Ask the train conductor if an upgrade is possible. This cannot be guaranteed. If it is possible, you will have to pay a surcharge on the spot.

What is a compartment (also called a coupe)?

A coupe is a separate space inside a carriage. There are usually different types of compartments on a night train (e.g. with seats, couchettes or sleepers).

What is a carriage (also called a wagon)?

What is a seat?

You will spend the night in a compartment with individual seats. Most night trains have seats that can recline.

What is a sleeper?

Is there a washroom facility (shower, toilet, etc.) in each carriage?

Typically, all night trains have toilets and washrooms in each carriage. Some night trains even have compartments with private sinks or showers. You will find details of the available washing facilities on the page of each night train connection.

Will a stroller or baby carriage fit in the compartment?

Most strollers and buggies are about 55cm wide which means there is not enough room in the compartment.

Can I choose my seat on the train?

It is currently not possible to choose your seat on the train. For each booking, we will obviously try to group your travel company close to each other as much as possible depending on availability.

How much legroom is there with a seat?

This varies by night train, the legroom is typically minimum 60cm which you share with the person sitting opposite you.

Can I show my tickets digitally?

You can also display your tickets digitally on your smartphone or tablet.

Are towels provided in the couchette and sleepers?

Towels are not usually provided on most night trains; we recommend that you bring your own. There are some exceptions, such as ÖBB’s deluxe sleeper compartment. This type of accommodation has a private shower and towels are provided.

Will I get a a blanket/pillow with my seat?

If you chose to book a seat, no blankets or pillows are provided. Blankets and pillows are only provided in couchettes and sleepers.

Can I drink tap water on board?

Tap water on the train is not suitable for drinking. On some night trains, passengers receive a free bottle of mineral water. On most night trains, you can also buy water from the train attendants.

How much luggage can I take?

Each railroad company has its own policy regarding the amount of luggage allowed. As a general rule, you must be able to carry all luggage yourself. Make sure to stow luggage in the provided storage areas as much as possible so that fellow passengers are not inconvenienced. Also ensure that aisles, doors and emergency exits remain clear at all times.

Can I bring skis or a snowboard?

On most night trains, you can bring skis or snowboards. Make sure these are stored properly in such a way that your fellow passengers are not inconvenienced. Also ensure that aisles, doors and emergency exits remain clear at all times.

Where can I store my luggage on board?

Make sure to stow luggage in the provided storage areas as much as possible so that fellow passengers are not inconvenienced. This could be in the luggage racks or under the seats, for example. Also ensure that aisles, doors and emergency exits remain clear at all times.

Can I store my luggage safely?

You can store your luggage in your own compartment, but you remain responsible for your luggage.

Are there lockers?

There are no lockers on board.

Are there electrical outlets on board?

In most night trains, there are electrical outlets on board, often even in every compartment.

Are there USB connections on board?

There are no USB connections.

Are there reading lights?

In compartments with seats, there are usually no reading lights. In the other types of compartments (couchettes, sleepers), there are reading lights on most night trains.

Do the lights stay on at night?

The lighting can be controlled per compartment, so you can decide for yourself.

Do the compartments have air conditioning? Can I control the temperature myself?

This varies by railroad company. On ÖBB and SNCF night trains, there is air conditioning in every compartment. On European Sleepers night trains, there is no airconditioning available.

Does the window open?

There is no general answer, this varies by night train.

Can I lock the compartment from the inside?

On most trains you can close the compartments from the inside but this can vary by night train (and by type of compartment).

Can I close the compartment from the outside, such as when I go to the toilet?

There is no general answer, this varies by night train.

Payment options

How can I pay?

There are several ways to pay, both by debit and credit card. Find more info here

When should I pay?

After you confirm by e-mail, you will receive a payment link. You must pay within 24 hours.

Can I buy tickets on the train?

It is not possible to buy tickets on the train.

Booking

What types of accommodations can I book?

This depends from night train to night train. Typically, a night train has three general types of accommodations: seats, couchettes and sleepers.

Seat: You will spend the night in a compartment with individual seats. Most night trains have seats that can recline.

Couchette: During the day, this compartment has benches. At night, the benches can be transformed into individual sleeping berths.

Sleeper: Similar to a couchette but with more space, more comfort and fewer passengers. You sleep on a mattress instead of a sofa bed.

Can I choose different types of accommodations in the same booking?

It is not possible to choose different types of accommodations within the same booking.

As a woman I would like to travel in a women-only compartment. Is that possible?

On most night trains, it is possible to book a women-only compartment.

What is the maximum number of people you can book per compartment?

It depends on the type of compartment you choose. Seat compartiments usually accommodate up to six persons. Couchettes usually accommodate four to six persons. Finally sleepers usually accommodate one to three persons. The exact details however can vary from night train to night train. You can find this information for each night train on the night train pages on our website.

Why are you asking about my gender? Can I also indicate gender X?

The railroad companies we work with require us to provide this information.

How can I change or cancel my booking?

You can change your departure and/or your arrival date, station or accommodation type depending on the terms and conditions. Please contact us for this what the options are. Please note that there may be a fee in order to change or cancel your booking.

Can I book as a company?

This is possible, please include your company details (including VAT number) in your booking.

Can I add one or more passengers after booking?

It is not possible to add passengers afterwards. You have to start a new booking to do this.

I already booked, can a fellow traveler still book a seat next to me?

This will usually not be possible, but it is best to contact us.

What does a train ticket cost?

The price will depend on the itinerary, the type of accommodation and the remaining availability on the train. In general, prices are lower if you book early. Please fill in the booking form and we will provide you with an exact price quote via email.

Why do you need the mobile number when booking?

The cell phone number is needed to notify you of last-minute changes.

Why can't I see exact prices on the site?

This is a functionality we are still working on, we hope to make this possible in the near future.

How soon will I receive my proposal?

We do our best to answer as soon as possible within 48 hours.

Why can't I book directly through the site?

This is a functionality we are still working on, we hope to make this possible in the near future.

When I book a couchette or sleeper, can I choose whether I can sleep in the lower, middle or upper berth??

Currently it is not possible to indicate which place you prefer. This is determined automatically. When you book a compartment privately, you are of course free to choose where you sleep.

Is there a children's rate?

Most night trains have discounted fares for children and young people.

How can I buy a ticket for my bike?

On some night trains you can bring your bike, on others you cannot. If you wish to bring a bicycle, you must reserve it in advance and pay a small surcharge. You can indicate how many bikes you wish to bring in the section at the bottom of the booking form.

How can I buy a ticket for my pet?

You can indicate how many pets you wish to bring in the section at the bottom of the booking form. Please note that each railway company has its specific policy regarding pets.

What should I do if I want to travel with more than 10 people?

You can enter the details up to 10 people through our booking form. If you are traveling with more people, please indicate this in the free text field at the bottom of the form.

How can I book a place for someone in a wheelchair or with a disability?

Some night trains (but not all) have wheelchaire accessible accommodations and sanitary facilitities. You can find more information about this on the page of each night train connection.

What is included in the ticket price?

This depends on which night train you choose and which type of accommodation. You can find details on what’s included on the route page on our site.

Does the price include both VAT and service charges?

Prices on our site include VAT. We charge an additional booking fee of 25 euros per booking.

May I interrupt my trip? For example, traveling from Berlin to Amsterdam the first day, and Amsterdam to Antwerp the second day?

No, this is not allowed.

Timetable and connections

How will I be kept informed in case of delays?

There are several apps available for you to download, such as the apps of NMBS/SNCB, NS and DB. They contain up to date timetable information. You can also consult the digital screens inside the train station to check for possible delays.

Is there any staff on the train that I can ask questions?

Each night train has several staff members on board. You can always approach them if you have any questions.

How much time in advance should I be present at the station?

We recommend being at the platform at least 15 minutes in advance.

My night train is severely delayed and I am waiting in the station. What should I do?

It is best to wait on the platform, you will be contacted as soon as possible to continue your journey.

The train schedule has changed, arriving at least 60 minutes later. What am I entitled to? What should I do?

In some cases, you are entitled to some form of compensation. This varies by railroad company.

Food and drink

Is there a restaurant on board?

There is no restaurant on board most night trains. Usually you can buy small snacks and drinks from the train attendants. On our night train pages you can see what food and drink options are available for each night train.

Can I have food delivered to my seat, couchette or sleeper?

On most night trains, this is possible. On our night train pages you can find this information.

Is breakfast included?

On most night trains there is an included breakfast if you book a couchette or sleeper. On our night train pages you can find this information.

Can I order hot food on board?

This depends on the railroad company you travel with. On some night trains this is possible, on others it is not.

Can I pay for food by cash, credit or debit card?

This depends on the railroad company you travel with. There are usually several payment options on most night trains.

Can I bring my own food and drink on board?

You can bring your own food and drinks on board, but it’s not allowed to cook food on board

Can I buy alcoholic beverages on board?

This depends on the railroad company you travel with. On most night trains, you will be able to buy a limited number of alcoholic beverages.

Is it possible to buy drinks/food/snacks/breakfast on board?

On most night trains, this is possible. On our night train pages you can find this information.

Bring a bike

Can I bring a bicycle?

Many night trains (but not all) allow you to bring a bicycle. Usually you will need to booking an additional bike ticket. On the pages of each night train, you can check whether you can bring a bicycle.

Do I need to reserve a spot for my bike?

It is usually mandatory to reserve a spot if you wish to bring your bicycle. Please indicate this in your booking.

Can I bring a recumbent bike, tandem, motorcycle, cart, mobility scooter or cargo bike?

No, you are not allowed to bring a recumbent bike, tandem, motorcycle, cart, mobility scooter or cargo bike.

How can I find the carriage for bicycles?

The number of the carriage with bike racks is indicated on your ticket and is also indicated with a sign on the exterior of the train.

How much time do I need to get on the train with my bike?

You have plenty of time to board, but try to find out in advance whether the bike storage is in the front, middle or back of the train.

How much does a ticket for my bike cost?

The cost varies but it is usually not expensive. When you book through the booking form we will include this in the proposal.

Can I carry a folding bike or a bike in a bag no bigger than a suitcase?

On most night trains, you can take a folding bike for free if it is no larger than a piece of luggage.

Can I safely leave my bike behind?

It is recommended that you bring your own safe lock to secure your bike.

Pets

Can I bring my pet with me?

Each railroad company has its own policy on bringing pets. You can find this information for each night train on the night train pages.

Can my guide dog travel on the train?

How much does a ticket for my dog or cat cost?

The price varies by railroad company. Please indicate this in the booking form and we will include this in the booking.

Do I have to reserve my own compartment if I bring my dog or cat?

It is mandatory on most night trains to book a compartment privately when bringing a dog or cat. However, each railroad company has its own policy on bringing pets. You can find this information for each night train on the night train pages.

Internet

Is there wifi on board the train?

On most night trains, there is no wifi on board.

Is there mobile reception on board the train?

Because of the long distance traveled, there is no guarantee of a continuous connection. If you want to stream music or video, we recommend downloading it in advance.

Interrail and Eurail

Is Interrail pass valid on every route?

On our night train pages you can check for each night train whether you can use an Interrail pass. Most of the time this is possible. Keep in mind that you do need to reserve a seat in advance and there may be an additional booking fee.

Children

When I want to book for a child, can I choose if they have their own seat, couchette or bed?

You can choose whether a child gets a separate seat. Young children up to a certain age can also share a seat with an adult on most night trains. The exact age varies by railroad company.

Are there safety nets for the middle and top beds (or the bottom for children)?

No, there are no safety nets on board. Usually the couchette and sleepers have raised edges. It is not suitable for very small children. We recommend that small children sleep in the bottom bunk.

Will a camp bed or travel crib fit between the beds in the compartment?

A camp bed or travel crib will not fit between the beds in the compartment. Children under 3 years of age travel free if they share a seat with another paying person.

Can I attach the Maxi-Cosi to the beds?

You cannot attach a Maxi-Cosi to the beds.

Are there special children's or family compartments?

There are no special children’s or family compartments. If you are traveling with children, we recommend booking a private compartment.

Accessibility

Are sleeper trains accessible to passengers with reduced mobility?

On some night trains, there are wheelchair accessible facilities for people with disabilities. On other night trains unfortunately not. For each night train, this information is indicated on the night train page on our website.

Can I get on and off the train independently with a wheelchair or assistive device?

Please consult the night train page to see what the available options are for people with a disability.

Can I reach the platforms by elevator?

In most train stations there elevators to the platforms.

Where are the toilets?

On most night trains, toilets are located at each end of the carriage.

Does the train have instructions in braille?

There are no instructions in braille on most night trains.

Safety

Do rail companies offer food or drink in the event of lengthy delays or cancellations?

In case of delays or cancellations, the railroad companies must inform you as soon as possible. During prolonged delays, railroad companies must provide refreshments to the extent that they are available or can be delivered locally.

Are there buttons in the couchette and sleeping compartments to request service of the train staff?

There is no general answer to this question. This varies by night train.

Will my train ticket be checked?

Yes, the train attendants will check so make sure you have a valid ticket.

Can I play music on the train?

You can play music as long as you don’t disturb your fellow passengers. Try to use headphones as much as possible.

When is the night silence period?

Most night trains have a silence period at night. The exact times vary by railroad company.

Do you offer special compartments for women traveling alone?

On most night trains, women can book a seat in a women-only compartment. Please indicate this in the booking form.
